What is the Milk Powder Spray Dryer?

A milk powder spray dryer sprays milk into fine droplets and then dries it into milk powder, primarily processing liquid materials. Milk powder is a heat-sensitive material. Using a spray dryer allows for instantaneous evaporation of moisture, preventing overheating of the material and avoiding the consequences of denaturation or charring.

How Milk Powder Spray Dryer Works?

The working principle is that the milk is atomised into small drops, then the drops and air fully contact each other, causing the moisture to vaporise rapidly; finally, the powder is collected.

Step 1: Atomization

The milk was pumped into a centrifugal atomiser or a pressure nozzle. The centrifugal atomiser produced uniform droplets under centrifugal force, making it suitable for large-scale production of >1 ton/h. However, the pressure nozzle sprays the liquid through a small hole to form an atomised cone spray, which is commonly used in medium and small production of <1 ton/h.

Step 2:Hot Air System

Air is heated to a specific temperature by an automatic temperature controller and then comes into contact with the atomised micro-droplets, achieving drying in a short time. The heat source for powder spray drying can be steam, electric, or gas. The most widely used method is steam heating, which offers the highest air cleanliness and safety. While electric heating is also clean, its high operating costs make it less of a preferred choice for factories. 

Step 3:Powder Collection System

Hot air carries milk power is achieved through gas-solid separation by centrifugal force. Due to the difference in density, most of the powder is thrown to the outer wall and falls to the bottom for collection. If you need the recovery rate up to 96%-98% or even higher, the blower outlet can also be equipped with a secondary cyclone separator or bag filter for collection.

Inlet Temperature

The inlet temperature of whole milk powder and other types of milk powder is different. Among them, infant formula has the strictest regulations. Each of our milk powder dryers is equipped with an automatic temperature controller. Excessively high inlet air temperature can cause the powder to stick to the wall, excessive moisture evaporation resulting in overly fine powder particles, and energy inefficiency. Similarly, excessively low temperatures can cause excessive moisture content and increased outlet temperatures.

Outlet Temperature

The higher the outlet temperature, the drier the milk powder. The lower the outlet temperature, the more likely it is to clump. Therefore, when the outlet temperature fluctuates, you need to focus on the following questions: Is the evaporation rate balanced? Is the feed too high? Is the heat insufficient? Therefore, the outlet temperature determines the quality of the milk powder.

Evaporation Capacity

The evaporation capacity means how much water can be evaporated in one hour. It is usually expressed in kg/h. If you want mass production, you need greater evaporation. On the other hand, you also need to spend more money on scaling up the powder dryer.

Whole Milk Powder

This milk powder spray dryer is really suitable for whole milk powder. Compared to regular milk powder, it has higher fat and sugar content, which can lead to risks of coking and wall adhesion. The spray dryer can precisely control air intake and air exhaust temperatures, making the milk powder flavour stable and reducing milk powder loss.

Skim Milk Powder
